Susie Wolff set for full Formula 1 test for Williams

Susie Wolff will have her first full Formula 1 test at the wheel of a Williams in this week’s ‘young-driver’ test at Silverstone.

The Scot will drive on Friday, with race driver Pastor Maldonado in action on Thursday, while Spaniard Daniel Juncadella is set to test on Wednesday.

Teams are being allowed to run race drivers for one day at the test on 17-19 July to evaluate new tyres.

Wolff, 30, is currently the development driver for Williams.

She raced in the DTM German touring car championship for seven years before quitting the series to concentrate on her work with the British outfit.

Susie Wolff

Born: 6/12/82, Oban, Scotland

Role: Williams development driver

Previous racing experience: 2006-12 DTM German touring cars. Always driving at least a year-old car; best result ninth. 2005 – Formula Three in UK; 2001-4 – Formula Renault in UK

Married to Toto Wolff, Mercedes director of motorsport and executive director (business) Mercedes F1 team. Shareholder in Williams

It is not the first time Wolff has driven an F1 car – she had a familiarisation test with Williams last October and was the first to drive the team’s 2013 car this year at an aerodynamic test in February, and described the Silverstone test as “a fantastic opportunity”.

Wolff added: “It’s going to be a big challenge but the most important thing is to do a solid and consistent job and to give good feedback to the team to be able to prove I am at the level to compete on a day such as this.

“Most of my work is based in the simulator which is why this day is so important for me.

“It will give me a better understanding of what the car is like on track and how that correlates to the simulator which will also help further develop the work I can do there.

“I am not naive enough to think it will be easy. I know it’s going to be tough and a big challenge but the team have prepared me well and I just need to believe in myself. I will go out there and do the best I can.”

The last woman to enter the F1 world championship was Italian Giovanna Amati, who failed to qualify for three races with Brabham in 1992 before being dropped. The last woman to race an F1 car was Italian Lella Lombardi in 1976.

Only two other teams have so far confirmed their line-ups.

Lotus will use Kimi Raikkonen on the final day of the test with Frenchman Nicolas Prost – the son of four-time world champion Alain Prost – driving on Wednesday and reserve driver Davide Valsecchi on Thursday.

McLaren and Red Bull have chosen not to use their race drivers.

Reserve driver Gary Paffett (Friday) and young drivers Kevin Magnussen and Oliver Turvey will test the McLaren.

Portuguese Antonio Felix Da Costa, a contender for a Toro Rosso seat in 2014, will take the first two days for Red Bull, with Spain’s Carlos Sainz coming in on Friday.

Sauber will use Nico Hulkenberg on Thursday, and split the rest of its programme between reserve driver Robin Frijns and Japanese former Formula 3 driver Kimiya Sato.

The ‘young-driver’ test is an attempt to allow teams to try out drivers who have not yet raced in F1 – the rules dictate that those taking part must have competed in no more than two grands prix.

But this stipulation was waived following the problems at the British Grand Prix to allow Pirelli to try out its new tyre design on the track that had caused the most problems.

A series of problems all contributed to six drivers suffering blowouts during the race.

Although Pirelli said the manner in which the teams were operating the tyres was partially to blame, the biggest single cause is believed to have been a weakness in the construction of the 2013 tyre at the shoulder, where the sidewall meets the tread.

Pirelli has decided to revert to the construction used in 2012,which has a stronger shoulder, from the Hungarian Grand Prix, but combined with the softer rubber compounds used so far in 2013.

As there were no similar problems last year, none are expected with the new design, but the Silverstone test gives Pirelli a chance to make sure before the teams reach the races at Spa in Belgium and Suzuka in Japan, which make even more extreme demands of the tyres.

Mercedes will not feature at the test because of their ban for taking part in the controversial Pirelli tyre test.

Tongkat Ali Herbal Supplements Show Promise for Reducing Stress and Improving Mood

Tongkat Ali root extract is best known for the positive effects of boosting male hormone levels in older men who are experiencing problems such as decreased libido, issues with sexual performance, difficulty gaining lean muscle and losing fat, and reduced stamina. The supplement has additional benefits that have been verified by research, including the ability to reduce stress and improve mood.

A Brief Overview

The botanical name for this plant is Eurycoma longifolia. Tongkat ali is the common name that has been used for centuries among people taking the herb for its various benefits. It’s important to buy the extract in a form standardized for the active ingredient, which is eurycomanone. It should be supplied by a reputable producer.

Hormone Balance

The herbal product appears to help the body return to a more optimum hormone balance. Levels of cortisol, also called adrenaline, decrease as the male hormone levels increase to a healthier state. A spike in adrenaline is important for situations in which a person must act quickly in response to a threat or danger, such as when a deer jumps out in front of the car. However, chronic high adrenaline levels are hard on the body, keeping the person in a perpetual state of unpleasant arousal.

Relevant Research

Changes in hormone levels have been verified by saliva testing in study participants. In one study, the average boost in testosterone was 37 percent. It appears that the herb makes the hormone more available for use in the body rather than stimulating more testosterone production. Subjective reports by these participants also indicate improvements such as decreased confusion, anger and tension.

What to Expect

Experts typically advise consumers to start with the lowest recommended dosage and gradually increase that if it seems necessary. It may take up to two weeks for hormone levels to change significantly, but some positive results should be experienced fairly quickly. The person may enjoy better mental clarity and concentration, for example. This person may also feel more energetic. Taking the extract beyond the recommended dose should be avoided, as this can cause some side effects and even reduce the positive effects.

Gifts for the Host or Hostess: Celebrate Entertaining

When the time comes for friends to get together, someone always ends up with the task of host or hostess. It’s not always an easy task and often comes with a lot of work like preparing the home for guests and getting food and beverages together for everyone to enjoy. It’s nice to show some appreciation by bringing in something special for the host of the get-together. There are several gifts that are ideal and fit well with the concept of entertaining.

Get the Party Started With Food

It’s nice to have something laid out for guests to enjoy when they walk through the door. Consider bringing a gift that makes this part of the job a little easier. It could be a basket filled with various cheeses and crackers. It could be a couple of different jellies with crackers or bread that make the perfect appetizer. This comes across as a thoughtful gift that can be used right away or saved for the host and hostess to enjoy after everyone has left.

The Perfect Beverage for the Party

A bottle of wine is a great gift to bring to a party. It can be used right away or saved for a later date. But bottles of wine aren’t the only option. Bringing a nice collection of teas or coffees is also a great idea. They provide variety for guests and make it easier for a host to have something for everyone. Most of the time samplers are ideal because they provide just enough of each item to be used, without leaving a lot behind for the hostess to store.

Creating the Ideal Atmosphere

Having a crowd over to the house can be a little intimidating. It’s important that everything is clean and most people want to make a great first impression as soon as people walk through the door. Things like candles, diffusers, and even frames make a great gift because they help with the overall look and feel of the home. They can be used by the host right away or they can be saved for another time. They are a thoughtful choice for someone that is going to be handling entertaining on a regular basis.

Tips to Surviving Mesothelioma

The most common form of mesothelioma is malignant pleural mesothelioma, the so-called “primary form” of pleural cancer. 80 to 85% of mesothelioma cases are due to an exposure to asbestos that may have occurred several decades before the development of the disease. Exposure to asbestos is mainly of occupational origin, but it can also be environmental (presence of asbestos in certain soils and their surroundings). Surviving Mesothelioma is not easy but it’s possible.

Generalities

Mesothelioma is a rare malignant tumor that affects the cells of the mesothelium, a protective membrane that covers most of the body’s internal organs including the pleura, peritoneum, and pericardium. Its most common form is malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma is a so-called primitive form of pleural cancer, which is characterized by a multiplication of cancer cells in the tissue constituting the pleura. The pleura is a membrane that envelops the lungs, consisting of two layers, one covers the lungs (inner leaflet or visceral pleura), the other covers the inside of the chest cavity (outer leaf or parietal pleura). When the disease occurs, the pleura thickens, takes on a scalloped appearance and the space between these two leaflets (called the pleural cavity) can fill with fluid and cause breathing difficulties.

Six out of every 10 new cases are diagnosed in people over 69 years of age. The most recent data show thousands of deaths per year.

Asbestos as the main cause

Multiple parameters influence the appearance of mesothelioma:

  • The time elapsed and the cumulative “dose” of asbestos. The dose is expressed in fibers per milliliter (mL) of air multiplied by the number of years of occupational exposure, and in fibers per liter of air multiplied by the number of years of exposure for general population exposures.
  • The peak of exposure is also important. The size and geometry of the fibers determine how the asbestos penetrated the respiratory tract and also included its bio-persistence. The most harmful fibers correspond to a length greater than 5 micrometers and a diameter of fewer than 0.5 micrometers.

Asbestos is the only recognized risk factor for mesothelioma in the pleura. Apart from erionite, a natural mineral fiber from the zeolite family, which is also a recognized risk factor, is only present in a couple parts of the world.

Essential Items Every Coffee Lover Needs to Have

Getting up and getting going in the morning is a bit easier said than done for some people. Rather than dragging due to a lack of energy, a person will need to find a way to fix this problem. One of the best way to get a burst of energy first thing in the morning is by drinking coffee.

There are a variety of coffee accessories and supplies on the market. Finding the right coffee supplies will require a person to do their homework. Here are some of the most essential supplies a new coffee drinker will need to invest in.

An Easy to Use and Durable Coffee Pot

The first thing a person will need to get when trying to drink coffee on a regular basis is a durable and easy to use coffee pot. Usually, a person will have a variety of different pots to choose from. Looking at the online reviews a particular pot gets is a great idea when trying to narrow the selection.

Ideally, a person will want to get a coffee pot that has an automatic programming feature. This feature will allow an individual to set a timer to start their pot of coffee each morning.

The Right Cups and Coffee

The next thing a person will need to think about getting is the right coffee and Coffee Mug. When trying to choose the right coffee, a person will need to think about how strong they want. They will also need to think about whether or not they want to grind their own beans or by coffee that is already ground up.

When choosing cups, a person will need to invest in appealing and large ones. There are a number of websites that will allow a person to customize the look of their coffee cups for a reasonable price.

Working with the right coffee supplier is a great way to get all of the supplies needed for a good cup of joe. At Coffee and Things, a person can get a good deal on the supplies they need. Be sure to visit their website to find out more about this company.

Babies and Sleep Schedules

Being a new parent is an exciting time, but it can also be very overwhelming. Fortunately, there are many helpful online sites that provide useful information, as well as support. Skirt Girlie is a great site that provides information on many different areas. One area in particular is sleep schedules. This is a difficult area for new parents because of the many times the baby is up each night. Fortunately, there are different methods and ways to help a baby get on a regular sleep schedule.

Sleep Patterns Found In Different Age Groups

The first few months of life are always the hardest. New parents are trying to get used to having a new baby around while on little to no sleep at all. It is important to note that babies are different. However, it is typical for new babies to sleep for two to four hours during one stretch. This is during the day and night. As the baby gets older, they may require three to four naps a day. Then, that turns into a morning nap and an afternoon nap. By 18 months, they normally only require an afternoon nap. They will continue napping until three to four years old, maybe even up to five years old.

Helping Baby To Get On A Sleep Schedule

One of the most important things to consider when trying to establish a sleep schedule is consistency. Try to put down the baby at the same time each day. This will help to develop a regular sleep pattern. Nap and bedtime rituals also help babies wind down, as well as signaling that it is time to rest. Such rituals include a bath, reading a book or a bottle of milk. Once a routine is established, try to stick with it as much as possible.

Babies and sleep can be difficult. However, there is a lot of support and information available. It is really trial and error until a good method is found. Until then, enjoy the time spent with the baby. Try to remain as calm as possible because things always work out in the end.

Improvements in Health and Quality of Life are Goals of Jim Plante and His Companies

Some entrepreneurs never seem to run out of energy. Jim Plante, for instance, has already founded or co-founded a number of businesses. Examples include Pathway Genomics, Klotho Therapeutics, Thynk Capital, and SmartDrive Systems. Mr. Plante is on a mission to eradicate genetic diseases or at least delay their onset until much later than is typical. Improving quality of life through technology is a high priority for these companies.

Biotechnology

Pathway Genomics performs a broad range of genetic testing to determine a person’s risk for certain diseases. Each person then has more knowledge to act on in the effort to prevent illness.

Klotho Therapeutics concentrates on using a particular protein in the genetic structure that is associated with better health and greater longevity. The team plans to use a synthetic version of this protein to boost serum levels in people who have depleted amounts. It’s natural for Klotho to decrease with age, and this gradual depletion is associated with degenerative disease and other negative effects.

Investment and Safe Driving

Thynk Capital was created to help fund ventures in biotechnology and other forms of technology as well as healthcare in general. SmartDrive Systems has a different type of goal, but it’s still geared toward helping people live longer, disability-free lives. This commercial driving safety program uses a combination of features that monitors behavior behind the wheel. Unsafe habits are addressed and accidents are prevented.

Kidney Disease

Another organization founded by Mr. Plante is the Foundation for Kidney Transplant Research. This entrepreneur has a personal stake in this type of research since polycystic kidney disease runs in his family. He himself carries the gene for this illness. As the disease runs its course, it can lead to chronic kidney failure, after which the individual must receive regular dialysis treatments or a kidney transplant.

People generally only live about five to ten years after beginning dialysis since the disease is so hard on the body. In addition, dialysis is tremendously inconvenient, typically requiring sessions three times each week, with each session lasting about four hours. Mr. Plante’s father received a kidney transplant many years ago but later passed away from cancer.
